That’s what a client hands over at the start of every project, and I take that seriously. The honest numbers, the weekly reports, and the standard the house is built to — all of it follows from treating what you have given me as something to look after and manage responsibly.
A construction project usually marks a transition — a move, a marriage, a baby, an emptying house. Those are meaningful moments, and they’re often stressful ones. The building process tends to add to the stress rather than absorb it. I started this company to be the steady part: clear expectations, consistent follow-through, and a calm presence in a stretch of someone’s life that probably has enough going on already.
More than twenty projects as project manager.
The project manager’s seat is where a project is won or lost. It builds the budgets and the schedules, then works hand in hand with the superintendent, the architect, the designer and the client to keep the project moving forward and everyone informed and aligned along the way.
I held that seat on more than twenty projects over my several years at Deadwood Construction in Ventura — kitchens, additions, ADUs, whole-home remodels, and rebuilds — including one where I ran the site as superintendent as well. Toward the end of my time there I was lead PM, running my own projects and overseeing a small team of project managers as well.
Before construction I studied economics and business at Westmont College in Montecito and spent three years in real estate finance. I left finance to build something physical. The financial training and understanding of real estate came with me, and it is why you will have a real number before you commit rather than after.
I also hold a Construction Management Certificate from UCLA, and I’m completing both Passive House credentials — the CPHC on the design and consulting side, the CPHT on the building side.

I’m Luc, the owner of Steady State Construction. My wife Haylee and I live in midtown Ventura, raising our own little construction crew — Declan (4), Finn (2), Torren (1), and a fourth boy due in March. So far they’re better at demolition than finish work.
I had already named this company when I took a tour of a Passive House in Morro Bay.
Standing in that house, I experienced one of those rare moments in my life that seemed to whisper, “this is what you’re meant to do”. Several things I’d been holding separately in my mind all seemed to come together at once — the building science, the craft and beauty of custom home building, and the management discipline it takes to pull it off. It was in that moment that the vision for this company really began to take shape.
I also realized that day that the term steady state is what Passive House and high-performance building is all about. Creating a home that is built well and uses Passive House principles leads to steady-state surface temperatures, humidity, and health and comfort for its occupants. I’d chosen the name for what it meant about how I’d treat people. Realizing it also described how I’d build felt like confirmation this company was going to do something special.
Steady State builds to the best standard available rather than the minimum the code allows.
What gets built here outlives all of us. That’s worth investing in.
